01 — The trouble
Overwhelmed by change and the endless demands of work, family and the noise around us, we lose our grip on the core of who we are. We are drawn to the periphery of life, and we live from that edge rather than the center.
In the process, we lose our way.
“I feel as if I have no self. All I do is struggle to meet the needs of my boss, the workplace, my children, and my aging parents. There’s nothing left for me, or of me, by the time I fall into bed.”
An executive, in their own words
02 — How it happens
When we lack the courage to hear how we may have hurt someone, we damage their trust, their love, and the relationship itself.
When we lack the courage to tell the truth about what we feel, we end up alienated and diminished.
When we lack the courage to pursue our dreams, we are left with lower self-respect and a gnawing sense of inadequacy.
When we lack the courage to reach out for the relationships we most desire, we are left with remorse and regret.
“For many of us, a life without the exercise of courage is like riding a high-performance bike with no chain. You can pedal furiously and still go nowhere.”Robert “Dusty” Staub
03 — The way back
Courage is not one great heroic act. It is small, daily acts that spring from the centre of who you are, the path of heart. Practised one at a time, they rebuild your connection to what matters, and to the people you love.
There are seven. Most of us are strong in several, and quietly avoid one. The one you avoid is the one that trips you up, the Achilles’ heel that keeps you limping through life.
Practised together, the seven acts hand you back the life you were meant to live. You stop reacting to the pressures of the moment and start showing up as the best version of yourself, moving through your days with more grace and power, at work and at home.
That is what leading from the heart means.
“Small, daily acts of courage develop what I like to call the cardiovascular system of your soul.”
Robert “Dusty” Staub · TEDxWilmington
This is the first time The 7 Acts of Courage has been recorded as an audiobook, and Dusty reads it himself. Releasing this autumn.

On the TEDx stage
At 28, standing at the bedside of a dying veteran, Dusty saw that he had been treating fear as if it were a god. In “Daily Acts of Courage” he tells what he did about it: nine months of refusing to fight his father the way they had always fought, and the ten years in which that man became his best friend.
“The 7 Acts of Courage accomplishes the crucial work of bringing spiritual values and psychological understanding into the marketplace of business and daily life. It is a lucid and moving invitation for each of us to live heroic lives distinguished by excellence at every level.”
